Stepping Out of Comfort Zone
Datang jauh-jauh dari negara tropis Indonesia ke Taiwan, Finella ingin sharing beberapa perubahan besar yang telah dia alami dan juga pelajari selama pengalaman belajarnya di Taiwan. Bagaimana dia memutuskan untuk berpisah dari keluarga demi masa depan sendiri? Kenapa dari awal dia sudah memilih Taiwan sebagai tujuan kuliahnya? Bagaimana dia yang sebelumnya panik dengan lingkungan baru dan gugup bertemu teman-teman baru karena kemampuan Mandarin yang masih lemah, pada akhirnya menjadi lebih percaya diri dan sudah beradaptasi dengan baik? It was a lot to take in, tapi dia yakin ini adalah keputusan yang harus dia ambil dan jalani sendiri. Life does not start until she leaves her comfort zone.
Coming all the way from the tropical country Indonesia to Taiwan, Finella has so much to share about some influential changes she has seen and new things she has learnt in her abroad experience in Taiwan. How she chose to overcome the fears of separation from family for the sake of her future. Why she chose Taiwan in the first place, how she was previously panicking over the new environment, nervous about meeting new people with her poor Chinese, until slowly became more confident and engaged in the situations. It was a lot to take in, but it was something she needed to do for herself. Life does not start until she leaves her comfort zone.
Mountains, Waters and… NCNU
Walaupun NCNU terletak di daerah yang agak terpencil, kehidupan Finella di universitas tersebut selama 4 tahun ini tidak kalah serunya. Karena universitas-universitas di Indonesia pada umumnya tidak menyediakan asrama untuk murid, disini dia malah bisa mendapatkan pengalaman tinggal di asrama. Beberapa bulan pertama disini, dia sering mengeluh tentang kehidupannya dikarenakan ini juga pertama kalinya dia tinggal sendiri di luar negri, mana di NCNU tempat makannya sedikit, alat transportasinya juga tidak begitu praktis. Tetapi justru itu dia belajar untuk lebih menghargai kesederhanaan dan lebih bisa melihat segala sesuatu dari sisi positifnya. Dia berusaha untuk stay productive dalam memanfaatkan resources dan kesempatan yang ditawarkan di NCNU, seperti beasiswa, lowongan kerja part-time, kegiatan ekstrakurikuler, kelas-kelas yang seru dan fasilitas kampus. Dia merasa sangat beruntung masuk ke NCNU karena universitas tersebut sangat memperhatikan dan menjaga murid-murid International maupun Overseas Chinese Students. Dan juga, enaknya tinggal di pegunungan adalah udaranya segar, dekat dengan tempat kunjungan turis dan biaya hidupnya yang relatif lebih rendah. She loves it here in the beautiful NCNU!
Although NCNU is geographically isolated, Finella has had a great four years at the university. While universities in Indonesia barely provide housing for students, she got to experience living in the dormitory here. First few months being here, she complained a lot about life since it was her first time living abroad alone, not to mention here in NCNU, there is few nearby dining and the transportation is a tad inconvenient. However, those were what make her appreciate the simple pleasures in life and look at the positive side of things. She learnt to be productive and make best use of every resource as well as opportunity NCNU has to offer, such as scholarship offers, part-time job vacancies, extracurricular activities, interesting courses and campus facilities. She was also grateful coming to NCNU because the school takes good care of both international and overseas Chinese students. And oh! The perks of living in mountainous areas are the fresh air, nearby tourist attractions and the considerably lower living cost. She loves it here in the beautiful NCNU.
Information Management students ≠ Programmers
“Murid-murid jurusan SI pasti jago programming!”
Nah biasanya dari 10 orang yang bertemu dengan Finella, ada 9 orang yang selalu mengutarakan kalimat tersebut ke dia ketika mendengar nama jurusan yang dia ambil. Di talk ini, dia akan berbagi sedikit mengenai apa yang sebenarnya bisa dia pelajari di jurusan ini selain programming, supaya persepsi orang luar terhadap jurusan ini bukan hanya tertuju pada bidang programming. Dan lagi, subjects pembelajaran untuk jurusan SI di NCNU juga bervariasi.
“IM students must be good at programming!”
Usually, 9 out of 10 people whom Finella met would say that to her. Here in her talk, she will share her experience so that she can shed some light on this matter. She will talk about what she can and has actually learned outside of programming. Moreover, she found that courses at NCNU IM are much more diversified.
A New Sense of Independence
Kuliah di luar negri telah mengubah Finella menjadi seseorang yang lebih mandiri. Pandangan dan cara berpikir dia juga otomatis berubah menjadi lebih luas. Dia yang dulunya agak tertutup dan sangat bergantung kepada orang sekarang berubah menjadi seseorang yang mandiri, outgoing dan open-minded. Dia belajar menyelesaikan masalah dengan sendirinya supaya orang tuanya tidak lagi harus khawatir. Pokoknya dimanapun kapanpun kalau ada kesempatan untuk studi keluar negri, never waste it, karena pengalaman yang didapat sungguh rewarding.
Studying abroad has made Finella grow into a more independent person. It completely changed her perspective on life. From the timid girl she was in high school to the independent and open-minded girl she was now. She learnt how to solve every problem by herself so that her parents could worry less. So, whenever there is chance to study abroad, never waste it, because it is one of the most rewarding experiences in life.
